UPDATE: This blog has been updated to reflect the actual winners last night at the 51st Annual CMA Awards.
The 51st Annual Country Music Association Awards are coming up this Wednesday on ABC-TV. There are tonnes of talented musicians and artists on the ballots this year, and each has a chance to win in their respective categories.
As always, I’m a betting man, so I’m going to make predictions on the winners, for bragging rights.
Feel free to let me know who you think is going to win, by emailing email@example.com, or by writing in the comments section below.
Entertainer Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton, Eric Church.
Winner: Garth Brooks.
This award could realistically go to any of the artists nominated, but Garth Brooks has been selling out stadiums across North America, and selling tonnes of albums too. Garth is going to make this 2 years in a row.
ACTUAL WINNER: Garth Brooks.
Single Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Better Man – Little Big Town, Blue Ain’t Your Color – Keith Urban, Body Like a Back Road – Sam Hunt, Dirt On My Boots – Jon Pardi, Tin Man – Miranda Lambert.
Winner: Body Like A Back Road – Sam Hunt.
While Miranda Lambert’s Tin Man is the correct choice musically, you can’t ignore the year Sam Hunt had with his smash single. It was on multiple charts, for multiple genre’s, for multiple months. I’d be surprised if he didn’t get the nod, unless the CMA is looking for a more traditional country song as its winner.
ACTUAL WINNER: Better Man – Little Big Town
Album Of The Year:
Nominee’s: The Breaker – Little Big Town, From A Room, Vol. 1 – Chris Stapleton, Heart Break – Lady Antebellum, The Nashville Sound – Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, The Weight Of These Wings – Miranda Lambert.
Winner: The Weight Of These Wings – Miranda Lambert.
You can’t ignore the magnitude, or the emotion, of Miranda Lambert’s latest album. Following on the heels of her divorce from Blake Shelton, this record was powerful, and should win in this category.
ACTUAL WINNER: From A Room, Vol. 1 – Chris Stapleton
Song Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Blue Ain’t Your Color, Better Man, Tin Man, Dirt On My Boots, Body Like A Back Road.
Winner: Tin Man.
This category is a toss-up for me, as any song listed above could win this award. However, I’m going with Tin Man, a beautiful song that might get neglected in other categories, but not this one.
ACTUAL WINNER: Better Man – Taylor Swift
Female Vocalist Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Reba McEntire.
Winner: Miranda Lambert/Maren Morris.
Could Reba win this award? Is that a possibility? It is, but it’s by no means a certainty. I’m going with either Maren Morris, or Miranda Lambert. Those feel like more probable outcomes in this category.
ACTUAL WINNER: Miranda Lambert
Male Vocalist Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Thomas Rhett.
Winner: Chris Stapleton.
While Thomas Rhett or Eric Church could walk away with the trophy at the end of the night, don’t count on it. Watch the video below for my reasons why.
ACTUAL WINNER: Chris Stapleton
Vocal Group Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, Old Dominion, Little Big Town, Zac Brown Band.
Winner: Old Dominion.
Based on some of my previous predictions, this is probably a spot where the CMA chooses a new(er) artist to take home a trophy. However, Lady Antebellum or Little Big Town could easily win, too.
ACTUAL WINNER: Lady Antebellum
Vocal Duo Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Dan + Shay, Brothers Osborne, Maddie & Tae, LOCASH, Florida Georgia Line.
Winner: Florida Georgia Line.
Nothing against Brothers Osborne, who would be my personal choice to win in this category, but Florida Georgia Line had the better year. From their duet with The Backstreet Boys, to their latest single Smooth, FGL has a lock on this category.
ACTUAL WINNER: Brothers Osborne
New Artist Of The Year:
Nominee’s: Old Dominion, Brett Young, Jon Pardi, Lauren Alaina, Luke Combs.
Winner: Jon Pardi.
So many great young artists! This is a tough category, but I’ve got to give the nod to Jon Pardi, narrowly edging Old Dominion (these guys are new? lol) and Luke Combs. In all honesty, any artist in the category could win, and it would be a deserving award.
ACTUAL WINNER: Jon Pardi
