There are many reasons someone might create a fake online profile. Some of those reasons include bullying, harassment, sexual gratification & loneliness, to name a few.
Whatever the reasons, fake social media profiles are here to stay, and they’re affecting our favourite artists. There has been a rash of instances lately, where someone creates a fake profile, pretending to be a musician or artist, then contacts the artists fans, looking for money, sex, etc…
It’s happened to Dean Brody.
Please note, Dean only uses his official social media accounts to connect with his fans. Please report any fake accounts! - Team DB— dean brody (@deanbrody) September 25, 2017
It’s happened to Brett Kissel.
It’s happened to Jake Owen.
It’s happened to Dani Strong, and her scammer actually stole from her.
ummm does someone stealing my song and saying it was theirs and selling it for years under their name count?? 😉😭— Dani Strong (@danistrong22) October 12, 2017
It’s happened to Dallas Smith, too. However, the scammer was stupid enough to message Dallas’ wife.
This troubling situation came to my attention again this past weekend, when one of our listeners, Kathleen, messaged us to ask why Jason Aldean was messaging her, to ask if she’d go on tour with him. So we asked our audience to share any other stories they might have with us.
Turns out, there are a lot of stories.
Tracey Lobsinger texted us to share her experience, writing “My daughter thought she was Facebook friends with Justin Timberlake until he started asking about certain body parts and requested pictures. Some really creepy people out there.”.
Kristina Iafrate shared on Facebook, adding “Both myself and some friends have been contacted by fake celebrity accounts including Sam Hunt. Usually asking for “help” regarding “secret things” that they don’t want management to know about “.
Alecia Woodburn told her story, noting “Someone made a fake account of me once, I found it was like wtf. And just recently someone made a fake Instagram using all my friends photos and cyber bullied one of my other friends who lived in BC. People are crazy .
