Her death affected me deeply. I heard about the accident on the Saturday night, then woke up to the news of her death on Sunday morning.
I became obsessed with watching television coverage, because I couldn’t imagine her boys being raised without her. She was the ‘People’s Princess’, the first time someone in the Royal family reached out to the regular people, including those with AIDS. She wanted her boys to live a fairly normal life, with real experiences. William was just 15, and Harry was 12 and her death has left a huge hole in their lives.
As a member of the media, I wondered how much of her death was my fault. She was killed being chased by paparazzi who valued her picture more than her life.
Today I will remember her, faults and all. She wasn’t perfect, but she did show the world that the monarchy could be human, and reach out to those in need.
